What Happens in an EFT Session?

An EFT session is non-diagnostic, non-interventionist, non-manipulative and only light pressure is applied by the client on specific acupoints on the face and upper torso.

EFT offers great healing benefits. It’s a non-invasive treatment that works on the understanding that ‘our negative emotions are caused by a disruption in the body’s energy system’. EFT works to clear these disruptions and breakdown the resulting emotional response, or intensity. It also helps restore emotional harmony and a general sense of wellbeing and enables simple and pain-free change.

EFT’s foundation is in Chinese Medicine and Acupressure. While acupressure uses needles, EFT uses gentle tapping with your fingertips on the meridian points (acupoints) of your skin. Tapping these points helps restore balance in the energy system. When you focus on a bad memory or a negative event while tapping these points, it helps remove the emotional charge associated with that memory or event. As you release the emotional charge of the thoughts, the memory no longer triggers an emotional response.

When you arrive for an EFT, session you’ll be given a short consultation where you’ll be asked why you’re seeking the therapy and if there’s a particular issue you’d like to address during the session. If you have a specific health issue, you’ll be asked whether you have sought medical advice and whether you are undergoing any other treatment. As EFT is a holistic approach to your health and wellbeing, you’ll also be asked about your lifestyle, level of happiness and any significant life events or past illnesses, as these could have relevance for your treatment. As EFT tapping can address a variety of physical and emotional issues, it’s important that the session starts with whatever is the most pressing issue for the client.

Using an acupressure body map, you’ll be shown where the meridian lines are on the human body. You’ll also be given a brief overview of how the meridian systems work and the role they play in supporting the functioning of the human system.

The treatment’s carried out in a seated position and you remain fully clothed. During an EFT session you’ll be taught a sequence of tapping points where you apply light pressure to specific points on your body. At the beginning of the session, you’ll be asked to focus on the current most important issue for you. You’ll be asked to take your awareness to your body while thinking about the issue you want to address. You’ll then be asked to give the emotion you’re feeling a rating from 0 to 10. This numerical rating is your Subjective Units of Distress score (SUD). 10 being the worst level of the emotion; 0 is when the emotion is completely gone. This SUD rating helps both the practitioner and you to measure the effectiveness of the techniques being used.

As you are guided through the tapping points, the practitioner will tap on their body and you will tap on your own. As you focus on the issue, you will tap on the endpoints of the meridians on the face and upper torso. You don’t have to dwell on painful memories for tapping to work. After a few rounds of tapping, you’ll be asked to rate the emotion once more and see where your SUD number is now. The aim is to get the SUD number down to 0.

Aside from being given guidance on how to do the tapping, you’ll be given specific exercises to do by yourself after the session.
