What Happens in a Reiki Session?

A Reiki treatment is non-diagnostic, non-interventionist, non-manipulative and no pressure is applied.

Reiki is a Japanese technique that promotes healing within the body, on physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. It also enhances deep relaxation and stress release. If our ‘life force energy’ is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress; if it’s high, we’re more capable of being healthy and happy.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which translates ‘God’s Wisdom’ or ‘The Higher Power’, and Ki which translates ‘life force energy’. So Reiki is actually ‘spiritually guided life force energy’.

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it’s not a religion. It has no dogma, and there’s nothing you must believe in order to receive a Reiki treatment.

Initially, you’ll have a consultation where a short case history will be taken prior to discussing what treatment options best suit your needs.

A session usually involves the client lying on a treatment couch or sitting in a comfortable, peaceful environment. There’s no need to remove any clothing as Reiki energy passes easily through all materials.

A Reiki Master/Practitioner works with the Reiki energy and the Reiki symbols. The practitioner places their hands gently on, or over, the body; there is no massage or manipulation.
Reiki may be experienced as a flow of energy, mild tingling, warmth, coolness, other sensations, or nothing at all. Everyone is different and we all experience things differently. Equally, no two sessions are the same.

There are a number of different techniques and the treatment will be based on your needs and wants at that particular time. Clearing blockages in the meridians, balancing and harmonising the chakras and clearing old stagnant energies from the various systems of the body will all help support the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Reiki is a wonderful way of balancing and harmonising all systems and functions of the body, repairing the auric field and grounding your energies. After a session, you’re likely to feel lighter in your energy, clearer in your mind and more present in the now.

At the end of the session, you’ll be offered a glass of water. This helps you bring your awareness back, grounds your energy into the here and now and helps flush out any toxins from your system. At this point, you’ll be asked if you’d like to share your experience, you’ll be given the opportunity to ask any questions and will be advised on aftercare.

Our bodies are naturally designed to heal and repair themselves. In response to the energy shifts resulting from your Reiki session, your body may now need rest to further support the healing. You may also need to increase your water intake in order to flush out the toxic release. Be guided by your body’s needs. Avoid alcohol immediately after the session, eat light, healthy food and exercise or rest according to your body’s dictates.

Reiki can also be given from a distance. This is simply known as distant healing.

If you wish to book a series of Reiki treatments, then a personal treatment plan can be created. This will always be subject to your own preferences and can be changed at any time in line with your progress.

Reiki is a complementary therapy. Reiki therapists are not medically trained and will therefore not advise on any medical conditions or medications. For all health conditions, please seek the advice of your G.P. or health practitioner.
